I'm just beginning to learn myself but didn't really consider which book was best; my thing was which cards I was drawn to. Turns out The Gilded Tarot was my pick. It came with a book by Barbara Moore that is a really good guide to learning.

You have reminded to open my eyes up around me more often. I know sometimes focus does become only on what is going on in my life so I will have to add those books to my list of to reads ;)

I think you theory could be very sound. If I was in your shoes I would be thinking the same thing. If it is him I'm sure no one is in any harm. You might want to check around to see if there are any mediums in your area that would be willing to come check things out for you.
