How to assess mediums

For laypeople, how can one discern if someone offering or describing himself as a medium is in fact truly in contact with those forces or possesses that ability?  Is there a means or mechanism to make that assessment or is it mainly a matter of luck?  I've seen folks who professed to be me...

Illness and other factors in determining what to examine closely

As someone who's had brain surgery and taken a host of legal mind-altering substances, I'm curious as to whether the effects of surgery and other illnesses upon psychic activity or psychic receptiveness has been discussed.  I certainly felt a bit more open, but I was never sure if that was a le...

Seeing relatives

Just a general query:  if one sees a deceased relative, even has a conversation with that relative, in a dream or in a state that at least seems a bit more conscious, what does that generally mean and how does that differ from seeing a nonrelative (or nonfriend)?

Considering differences

I'm curious as to whether there are different viewpoints concerning astrology, the occult or unknown, the paranormal, etc., between cultures and whether that's explored here.  This is obviously an English-speaking group, primarily, but has there been any discussion of the differences found in v...

I appreciate that.  The folks here seem very nice.  I'm not a complete believer in the non-science sciences (if that's a description), but all this is very interesting and certainly worthy of discussion.

Religious issues

I'm a Catholic.  I firmly believe in Jesus and in the Church.  I also, however, am open to the notion of ghosts, something that flies in the face of most theological teaching.  I also believe there may be something to esp, etc., which may or may not be contrary or problematic.  W...

Intro

I'm a newbie hereabouts and just wanted to say hello.  I'm 45, a lawyer, a Southerner, a liberal on most issues, a Catholic who leans towards the Orthodox Church, a husband, a father, and an epileptic with a bad back and occasionally a bad disposition. :smt015

Parallel worlds

I've read (usually in sci-fi, but sometimes in serious publications) that there are an infinite number of possible alternate history worlds and that the universe isn't quite as cut and dried as it seems.  Does anyone have any serious scientific analysis or research on this?

HELP!

The description pretty much says it.  However, I'm not really as depressing as all that in person; there is a bit more to my personality and my life.  However, dealing with the epilepsy and the medication and now also having to deal with a back that's about kaput is stressful and I'd like ...

From the floorboards up...

I'm a new member of the community and very much a virgin, if you'll forgive the term (but it's the most accurate description), in this area.  I'm interested in guidance and a basic description of the essentials of Feng Shui and it's use in private life and on the job.
