I don't know if i would be effective at homeschooling, first I work at home while they are at school and second I am working on my patience.  I do believe that homework was inappropriate for the age, I don't think my son talked about that stuff at that age, it should be age appropriate.

i believe boundaries are extremely important, and deep down kids really do appreciate it.  But they have to be appropriate and consistent.

1 I have a mother in law who is extremely controlling and is a true enabler to my children especially my teen son.  She disrespects my wishes as a mother and questions me and disagrees with me in front of my children.  She favors boys and will do and say things for him behind my back  ...

It takes a lot of patience, unconditional love, good morals, constant education and support.
