They may break down when they try to talk to you then they are just trying to be strong. They probally want to repress the thought of your fathers death because it makes them sad.

I am not outward with my emotions. I hide them from everyone. No one really knows. I just act happy or nonchalant and barely talk unless I have an opinion on something.

It is alright if you hug people occasionally to say goodbye or to show you love them, but my hugging seems like a ritual to my friends.
