two things ... (a) if was a natural sapphire, it could be an overload of energy to it and you were not properly grounded ... but as powerful as natural sapphires are, that is less likely than (b) it is a man-made sapphire and you simply overloaded it.  if a manmade gem or crystal is heated too fast ...
