Re: Exaltation

TheSaint wrote:Hi,

Ill try to give some intuitive understanding of why planets are exalted in their respective places.

We see from Aries, as it is the first house of the Zodiac.

SUN - Being the Lord of the 5th house, should be happy at 1,4,5,7,9,10.  Sun has directional strength at 10, but this is owned by Saturn. Sun represents Soul, and Soul represents the first house, so Sun is exalted in 1st house, which is Mars house and is also a Fiery sign.

SATURN - Being the Lord of 10 and 11.  Saturn has directional strength in 7th, Libra, also the house of Venus and an Airy Sign. Note that Saturn owns an Airy Sign. Also Saturn would like to do the opposite of what Sun does. So the exaltation is opposite. Lets look at other possible options. 1st house (No, Sun is exalted and also owned by Mars), 3 (possible) ,4 (No owned by Moon), 5( No owned by Sun), 6 (possible),  9 (No owned by Jup), 10 (possible, own sign), 11 (possible, own sign). I included all the Kendra, Konas and the Upachaya houses as Saturn owns a Kendra and Upachaya.

JUPITER - Owns 9 and 12, the houses of religious duty and Moksha. Possible options, 1,4,5,9,10. Directional Strength in 1st house, but Sun is exalted there. 9 is own house. 10 owned by Saturn. Strong candidates are 4 and 5, owned by Moon and Sun. Note that Capricorn represents cremation and Guru is everything but that. So, the exact opposite Cancer is reasonable for Jupiter.

VENUS - Owns 2 and 7, Maraka houses, 12th Lord can be considered as a Maraka planet. It fits well that Venus is exalted in 12th. I already mentioned about the 7/12 combination in a previous post. 7th Lord in 12th makes a person oversexed, and Venus strongly represents that matter. However for an Aries and Scorpio native, this not  be true, as Venus is exalted or in own house for these natives when placed in 12th. It could greatly help in spirituality.

MARS - Owns 1 and 8.  Directional Strength in 10th. Possible choices for exaltation 1,4,5,7,8,9,10,12. Mars, owns a mysterious house Scorpio, which is hidden and deals with underground layers. Nothing represents hidden better than Capricorn which stands for cremation. Mars would also like 12th, a hidden house and owned by friend Jupiter. But Pisces is too spiritual for his liking.

MERCURY - Owns 3 and 6. Possible choices, 3,6,8,10,11,12. I think that Aquarius would have been the ideal position for exaltation. Being an airy sign, owned by friend Saturn. Also being 11th an Upachaya house. However, 6th own house is been taken as the house of exaltation, which I am not sure why.

MOON - Owns 4. Possible choices, 1,4,5,7,9,10. 1(No, represents Mind and not the Soul), 4 (possible, own house), 5 (yes, owned by Sun), 9 (very favourable, Jupiter's house), 10 (No, Saturn owned).  However, Moon is exalted in 2nd. This seems driven more by its point of debility. Moon would not like to be hidden, i.e., 3, 6, 8, 12, Scorpio, Capricorn. 8th which deals with hidden matters, planets in 8th are considered being hidden, also 8th here is Scorpio. So it appears that Moon is weakest here, making the opposite Taurus its exaltation. I think 9th (Sagittarius) would have been a better option for exaltation.

NODES- It is considered that Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Gemini, and Ketu in Scorpio and Sagittarius. As Ketu owns Scorpio and Pisces, I think it is more appropriate that Ketu should be exalted in 9th house which is Jupiter's house, as Ketu is the most spiritual planet, this would make Rahu exalted in Mercury.

All the comments above, are just a general understanding and you need not agree with everything or anything mentioned above.

Karthikeyan
Namaskaar Karthikeyan ji,
Good going. Though we may not agree with all your observations, atleast you attempted. Kudos to you for it.

A pattern?

Post by vivekvshetty » Wed Feb 27, 2008 5:39 pm

namaskaar All,
Try this exercise.
Write the Grahas in their exalation Raashis (For The Chaaya Grahas i.e. the nodes use Mithuna and Dhanu).
We see no Graha except Chandra gets Exalted in a Sthira Raashi.
The mind is always very fast changing and the best placement would be for it to be quiet or fixed.
Now can you see a pattern from the fixed Raashis?
Take each fixed (Sthira) Raashi one by one and try to look at the Grahas placing them in their uccha (Exalted) Raashis.

Namaskaar Jai ji,
Thanx for attempting the exercise. The second question can be attempted again at a later date, when you feel more comfortable to deal with it.
We did nopt expect everyone to attempt it just now.

Here is an easy way that I have come across in somewhere(internet i think) to remember exaltation/debilitation signs:

Sun is king
Moon is queen
Mars is commander
Mercury is prince
Jupiter is minister
Venus is damsel
Saturn is servant

The king is happy/gets most respect when visiting his commander and losses his diginity when visiting damsel because he falls prey to sensual desire.  Explanation: Sun, the king gets exalted in Aries, the house owned by Mars, the commander. Similarly for Venus.  The queen is most happy next to king or when visiting the damsel who though is her competitor does not have the official status and the queen loses her respect when visiting the commander because he also has direct access to the king on official matters.

The commander gains most respect(and hence is happy because he finds happines in being accorded respect) when visiting the servant and looses his status when visiting the queen just as the queen looses her status when visiting him. There is some  competition  between them because they both have direct access to the king(only for the sake of this story).

The prince is most happy in his own house because he he can be carefree in his own house and looses his status when visiting the minister because he lacks the maturity of the minister because of which the minister commands the respect of the king.  The places where the minister gets respect and looses it is exactly opposite that of the commander.

The damsel gains most respect when visiting the minister and looses it when visting the prince(this needs embellishment).
The servant gains most repect when visiting the damsel as both belong to similar class  and he is the source of gossip of the palace for her and looses his respect when visiting the commander(which is pretty straighforward).

This is not exactly as I had read because I have forgotten it. So I have added my own twist.  I invite everyone to add their twist to the story.

Here is a astrological story I have read recently(again forgot the source) which I thought my fellow learners will find interesting:

Ravana who was a great tapasvi, had full control of all planets.  When his son Indrajith was about to born, he ordered all the planets to be placed in the 11th house of his son(house of victory) so that Indrajith never faces defeat.  Dismayed by this, Devas approached Shaniswara to do something to avert this situation because if Indrajith, the Asura becomes undefeatable he will wreak havoc.  So, at the critical moment of birth, Shaniswara who was placed in 11th House extends his leg into 12th House.  Ravana comes to know of this after calculating Indrajith's Horoscope(Ravana was an expert in many vidyas).  Angered by this act, he breaks Shaniswara's legs resulting in his lameness(slow results, obstacles).

Namaskaar Priyesh ji,
Right now we dont have much to share on this. In the future we will surely try to dig up something on the vaahana of the Grahas. There are difference of opinion on many Graha vaahans.
In the kaala Chakra you can find the vaahans of deities associated with the grahas.

Respected,

I could not co-relate between age and maturation of graha. My understanding is e.g. surya age 50 years means he will live upto 50 years and maturation means he will attain puberty at 22 years. Is it right? How about Shukra then?

Thanks

Namaskaar volcanopetal ji,
It is not that way.
Surya's appearance is said to be like that of a fifty year old man. You must be aware that the Grahas have been personified in Jyotish.
Secondly it is used in different ways.
For example if Surya is showing the thief in a Prashna chart then we can estimate the age of the thief to of around fifty (middle aged).
An expert in Prashna can corelate people around him during the prashna process and use them to confirm his readings.

The maturation age on the other hand is used for timing events.
If you are aware of the bogey called Mangal dosha (Kuja dosha), then a person having this dosha in his chart is advised to marry after 28 years of age. As then mangal Dosha is said to become inoperative.

Both thew age given and the maturation age have different usages.

Quick questions

Post by pranavg » Sun Oct 04, 2015 3:14 pm

Hi Vivekji and RishiRahulji,

I had a few questions:
1. The age / maturation age of planets mentioned in this lesson are different than Natural years of maturity of Grahas mentioned in Lesson 20 The Big Picture in the context of Graha Maalika Yoga. Could you please let us know if these are different and if yes in what sense?

2. We have not even considered the presence of Uranus, Neptune, Pluto which some astrologers claim to have a certain role in predictions. Have we ignored them for a reason?

3. I have downloaded "jh_short_install.exe" as I could not get a working link to the full version. Do let me know if there is something that I may miss with this limited version?
If you can provide a working link to the full version that would help. Even pdf that was attached in this lesson is unavailable.

Looking forward to your insights.

Thanks and regards,
Pranav

Hi pranavg,

Below is a direct link to the full version of the Jagannatha Hora: Vedic Astrology Software Version 7.66

The installer program has been compressed or zipped to make its download size smaller.

You will need a program such as WinZip or WinRAR to decompress it, before installing the software by double clicking on the exe file.

http://www.vedicastrologer.org/jh/jh_full_install.zip

This link was working for me on October 5th, 2015. The download size of the file is 47.2 MB.

Regards,

Pranav,

My apologies for sticking my nose in Shetty ji's thread but trying to include transsaturnines (and why leave out at least the larger asteroids or even planet x or niburu whose body is not visible [or detected by star-gazers] similar to lunar nodes and upagrahas etc).

The obvious problem would be for assigning signs and star rulerships to these new contenders and findng a place in the dasha schemes utilized in jyotish. Hence best to not include these in the jyotish framework (which has many gaps already) in the beginning when learning jyotish. For research those are ripe areas, but have not been well documented or demonstrated satisfactorily so far.

The same caveat applies to experimental utilization of tropicl (Sayan) zodiac in jyotish, or tropical house systems and related techniques.

Just a thought!

Hi Rohiniranjan ji,

Thanks for your comments.
Such insights from a knowledgeable co-learner like you is what we beginners put our bets on. I am sure Vivekji and RishiRahulji would not mind. From the little that I know about them, they are in fact known to appreciate contributions by others.
Please keep sharing your knowledge even if it is not addressed to you. I would be looking forward. Vivekji and RishiRahulji can then add their thoughts to enlighten us further.

Coming to the topic,
I understand these are ripe areas but also believe that the little research that is in place should not be ignored.
You would know better than me, but I have learnt that considering their placements (if not the dashas and rulerships) is accepted widely.

eg:
Uranus in 7th or aspecting 7th shows potential to break marriage. Uranus is seen hundreds of time more fiery(!) than Mars as in if Mars equates electric shock Uranus indicates lightening per se.
Neptune is associated with mysteries, intuition and in other contexts (may be more in prashna kundali) with oceans
Pluto speaks of revolutions (again may be more in mundane astrology), mass movements / tragedies etc. which can be used even in deep analysis of a native's kundali.
I am sure there is a lot more that is associated with these and other outer bodies, but this is something that I know with my limited knowledge.

Would you not agree that a Uranus in 7th or aspecting 7th (presuming above is correct) is something that an astrologer should not ignore when guiding a native?

Thanks and regards,
Pranav

Thanks and regards,
Pranav

I have used longevity as the directive...! ;-)
I avoid mixing up symbolisms etc. between different systems.

But please follow your guides and their guidance.
