lesson 17 planetary motions.

Post by vivekvshetty » Sat Jul 25, 2009 4:03 pm

Graha chaara
Char means to move and chaara means movement or motion.
In this lesson we are going to learn about the different types of motions of the Grahas.
The apparent motion of the Grahas can be broadly divided into two type, one is the forward or Zodiacal motion and the other is their Anti zodiacal or backward motion. The forward motion of Grahas is called Direct motion in western Astrology and is called Maargi in jyotish. The Graha moves in the order of the Raashis in this motion and in a Raashi also it moves from a lesser longitude to the greater longitude.
The Backward motion of the Grahas is called as Retrograde motion in Western Astrology and is called Vakri in Jyotish. The Graha moves in the reverse order of the Zodiac or we can say it goes from a greater longitude to lesser longitude.

For Example if we see todays (25th July 2009) planetary longitudes then we will see that, Guru is marked retrograde in the Horoscope. Compare its longitude for today with its longitude for tomorrow and you will see that it has moves back. Compare this to the motion of the other Grahas. can you spot another retrograde Graha/s?

If you have checked the software, you would have observed that Raahu is the other graha which moves backwards or is retrograde. No other Grahas are vakri for today. Now if you have the patience to go forwards (ofcourse, you may also go backwards and see the Grahas longitudes) for each day and look up the grahas, you will observe that Raahu* (this includes its other half Ketu) always moves in a retrograde motion and The Luminaries (Prakaash Grahas) Surya and chandra never retrograde. The other five grahas which seem to retrograde for some time, then they move forward in direct motion. In other words sometimes they emulate the Luminaries and sometimes they emulate the Shadowy planets (Chaayaa Grahas) Raahu and Ketu.
This makes us wonder as to if there is a difference in charecteristics of a Graha when it is retrograde compared to when it is in direct motion?
The answer to this is a big YES! A Graha which is Maargi is following the path of the light whereas, the Graha which is Vakri is following the Nodes.
In other words it means that a maargi Graha follows the natural order of progress and a vakri Graha is trying to retrace its steps, and in doing so it is following the path of intense desires. Why desires? well, because of the two nodes, Raahu is the cause of rebirth as it shows unfulfilled desires. Ketu on the other hand shows Moksha and a birth chart means that the person has not got Moksha. so a Vakri will be more like Raahu.
So the first charecteristic of a Vakri Graha is that it shows a strong unfulfilled desire carried over from past (birth).

* in traditional Jyotish The mean motion of the nodes are taken and not the true motion.

Dear Vivek ji

Is the vakri state of planet is only limited to the cause of rebirth i have read about the shani vakri in chart shows the rebirth to complete karma of previous birth so can this be applied to the natives born during the guru vakri stithi which currently is that they are born to acquire knowledge or wealth

Namaskaar Swapnil ji,
One step at a time and we are on sure footing all the time, never loosing our balance.
First of all there was a birth and hence a birth chart. This means that there was no moksha in previous birth. Which again means some desire as the cause of rebirth. So behind each birth some desire is always the reason for it. Which is the reason why in Jyotish the mean motion of Raahu is taken and not the true motion. So in any horoscope at-least one Graha is retrograde (Raahu). Raahu is the cause of rebirth.
Other Grahas when retrograde also shows a strong desire, to judge what it is, many other factors are to be looked into. We will get to this as the lesson advances. Try to ask queries only to the points discussed in the lesson till now. Otherwise the lesson may get off-track.
Till now individual Grahas and their retrogression are not discussed. We are trying to dechiper the phenomenon of retrogression and the general effect we may expect.
We know you would understand this stand of ours.

we have seen that a Retrograde Graha has a lot of desires. Desires are seen from the seventh Bhaava and hence a vakri Graha desires the seventh from it. which may hint at, the Graha is unhappy in its current position and wants to get to the seventh from it. In Jyotish text books it is stated that a Vakri exalted Graha acts as a debilitated and a neecha vakri graha will act as exalted. Now we know the reason for this.
Ofcourse this does not mean that a Vakri Neecha graha has become exalted or vice versa. It just means that the Graha is focussed on the seventh from itself due to intense desire.

When we come to the lesson on learning to quantify the strength of a Graha (Graha Bala), we will come to the term called Chestta Bala. A Vakri Graha is said to possess high Chestta Bala. The word Chestta means the great strength of perseverance. Hence we may deduce that a vakri Graha gives the strength to keep on trying till success is attained.
Pundit Sanjay Rath always liked to remind us of the story of king Bruce and the spider whenever retrogression was discussed. Many may be aware of the story, if not, there always google.
Now this also gives us a hint that a retrograde Graha will give its effect very late and only after a great amount of trails and tribulations.

Reversal of effect.

Post by vivekvshetty » Wed Jul 29, 2009 3:05 pm

A Vakri graha also shows that the initial effect promised by the Graha may be reversed. Suppose the Graha promises great good things as read by the normal rules, but because it is Vakri it will give the reverse effect.
One of the best Horoscope to see and remember the effect of a Vakri graha is Shri Raama's Kundali. In this Kundali shani is Vakri.
Shani is exalted in the fourth bhaava and vakri in Shri Raama's horoscope.

A Dictum!

Post by vivekvshetty » Fri Jul 31, 2009 3:59 pm

A Dictum applicable to vakri Grahas.
"If a natural benefic is retrograde & debilitated in a Kendra or Trikona, it indicates a curse from a past life.... Natural malefic planets in a Kendra or Trikona when retrograde and debilitated are a blessing from past birth. The opposite occurs in a dusthana."

In Lord Raama's chart, Shani is exalted and vakri in a Kendra and has caused much turmoil in his life.

Vakri - Analysis.

Post by vivekvshetty » Mon Aug 10, 2009 3:33 pm

To analyse a Vakri Graha we take a two step approach.
First step is the Kaarakatwa of the Vakri Graha.
Take for example Guru. If Guru is vakri in achart then also analyse the Bhaavas foe which Guru is a significator (Kaaraka). You have to see the first (Dhi), Second (money), Fifth (children), ninth (bhaagya) and eleventh (income). Analyse the Lord as well as the bhaava. If any of them is afflicted then that area shows a problem zone.
Second step. See the bhaavas owned by the Vakri Graha and then analyse the Placement of the Kaarakas of these Bhaavas. If both the kaarakas and the lordship have a problem you can pinpoint the area/s of life of the native affected.
For example if in a chart having guru vakri and it owns the fourth and seventh Bhaavas. the kaaraka/s for fourth are Chandra and also Shukra. If these are not well placed then you may zero in on the fourth bhaava indication to suffer.

Different veiwpoints.

Post by vivekvshetty » Wed Aug 12, 2009 3:50 pm

There are different veiw points in different traditions to analyse the apparent phenomenon of Retrogression.
Sayaana Jyotish (Western Astrology) also has tried to decipher the effects of Vakra Grahas. this is beyond the purview of this course but, the learners could well do some reading on this.
Then there is the approach of the naadi system as propounded by Shri R G Rao. In this system a vakri graha is taken to be in the previous Raashi than the actual Raashi. For example if Guru is Vakri in Kumbha then in this system it is taken to be in Makara and the results pronounced accordingly. Other teachers have different approach, like shri K.N Rao ji, The Krishnamurthy Paddhathi, Systems approach founder shri V K choudhary ji.

A few years back we had the good fortune of listening to the great Scholar Shri Chandubhai Patel Saheb, he was sharing his insights on vakri graha effects. I was a bit inattentive (my loss really) and so did not take detailed notes. He spoke on the transit effects in detail but also shared his veiws on the effects of vakri graha in Natal charts.
According to him Mangal if Vakri in a chart gives 'Bhoo Phalam' that is benefits from real estates.
Budha vakri is said to protect from accidents and give happiness.
Guru vakri  give childrens who will look after the Native even in old age tii the end.
Shukra Vakri makes one libidinous and can give bad experiences in sex, like molestations etc.
Shani vakri is said to make the person very Lucky.

If the eighth lord from any bhaava is vakri then the bhaava is blessed with longevity. For example 4th lord is vakri in a chart, then the father of the native has a long life. The reason for this is that the 4th is the 8th from the 9th and hence the longevty of the 9th.
Same way other bhaavas may also be seen.

He spoke specially on the gochar aspect of vakri graha and its effect in individual charts as well as to the world (Mundane Astrology). He was writing a book on this, unfortunately he passed away recently.

Dear Vivekji,   Namashkaar,

If we  come accross  Sukra in vakri and also vargothama and Exalted in a chart what will be the effects of him over the native ? ( sukra being natural benefic graha ?)  At the same time he is lord of 3 rd as well as lord of 8th. So he becomes malefic by  lordship of houses. We are having thread related to Neech planet with vargothama and retro. But my concern is  what will be the results of Sukra  , being exalted and retro and also in vargothama position?  Sukra is in kendra  (in lagna ). While reading this lesson and also the thread about neech vargothama retro , I wish to know the effects of this  kind of placement  . So kindly  make me understand this sort of placement please.  Thanks in advance.

prasanna

namaskaar Prasanna ji,
Stick to the basics and you will not go wrong. Break the placement into different parts and then try to combine them.
Natural benefic Exalted in Lagna
shukra exalted
Shukra vargottama
Shukra a functional malefic
Shukra vakri

do this and let us see what comes up from the churning.

Patel Saheb gave his knowledge and we tried to share it, we may not agree totally but felt it to be our duty to note down it here as to spur more interest from the learners. we are glad that it did pique your interest.
specially as you said that we should always keep in mind shri rama chart

Prabhu Shri Raama was unlucky? His name itself is the most luckiest a person can get! look at Hanumaan.

Can we apply that lords 7th 8th lord vakri 8th from 8th is 3rd house of co borns may be that due to which laxmana lived even when he was badly injured would like to know abt 2nd house as i dont exactly know which person is seen from 2nd house
swapnil ji, you got it wrong. The seventh is eighth from the 12th and will give longevity to the 12th.
eighth is the 8th from the 1st and hence will give longevity to the first i.e. to Prabhu Raama himself.
Remember this is just a rule from Patel saaheb and he may have seen this as applicable in many charts, we also have to see this rule and see its effect in Birth charts to confirm its validity.
