Meditation is to think upon - it is up to you to create the space you want to be conscious of during this time of peace. Make a beautiful scene in your mind's eye of gardens, rivers, mountains - whatever nature calls to your soul. Then when the monkey mind (as it is called) sends thoughts jumping, you can return to your own santuary of peace. You create the experience - it is not allowed to just float into your mind.
Mediumship
It seems whenever I try to meditate and get the "monkey brain" still I fall asleep before I get to concentrate on what's going on around me.

I believe that all life forms have the ability to use extra sensory perception but considering humans have this far created and made tools supplies and equipment that have become ease in our lives solving our every problem that no wonder the use of our human brain is only 5% of what is available to us, considering the brain is consistently growing. Through meditation I believe more of our natural perception is concrete and the frame work to those doors in our mind can be opened.
