LESSION 5.2, ASPECTS and How to Interpret Them

Post by Youdah » Fri Nov 07, 2008 4:37 am

We've talking a little bit about aspects in other lessons.  Mostly, we've just talked about what they are called, and how energy behaves with different kinds of aspects.  Now, we are going to talk about what they mean.  I will continue to add to this section as I have time, so be sure to check back for updates and additions, and new posts.  Feel free to add your own "meaning" and interpretations, and information about each of the aspects as I get information posted.  Often, I direct students to someone else's website or information.  However, I haven't seen anyone's descriptions of these aspects that give a good description of the aspects, so I'm writing my own.  This section will cover quite a bit of information, so please continue to watch this thread for updates since I can't get it all done, all at once!  :)

Conjunction
Keyword:  Integration

Two planets are in conjunction, or conjunct, when they occupy the same degree and sign.  This gives a good clue to how these two different planets should be read.  These two planets are literally "together" and so their energy is "together" and combined.

Whenever you see a conjunction, the two planets are at the beginning of a new cycle.  The rest of the cycle will be played out through the sextile, square, trine, inconjunct, opposition; then in the return side of the cycle, the inconjunct, trine, square and sextile until the two planets are conjunct again.  Whenever there is a difficulty in the person's life, look back to when the conjunction occurred to find the "roots" of the problem and possible remedies and how to resolve the difficulty.  If the conjunction between the two planets occurred pre-birth of the native, then this is a cycle that was begun in a previous lifetime that needs to be resolved in this one.

Suppose that you have the color blue and the color red.  You pour them both into the same bowl.  Instead of the two colors fighting or separating, they mix together to form purple.  Now, they are integrated, together, and they no longer have a distinct "color" of their own.  This is how the energy is going to work with a conjunction.  However, the colors don't just mix together to form a new color, they each multiply and enforce each other so the combined "color" is more intense.  This is the kind of "energy" that is generated with any conjunction.  When this intensity is achieved, both planets involved "lose" a bit of what they were, so that the combined strength is magnified and intensified.  A conjunction produces a great deal of intensity, but this doesn't mean that there is a great deal of energy.  "Energy" is generated with "hard" aspects.  So, an abundance of conjunctions in the chart will cause the native to lack the energy to really apply the intensity generated with a conjunction, unless squares and oppositions are elsewhere in the chart.  Too many conjunctions in the chart will cause the native to "be all dressed up, and no where to go," as the expression goes.

This is energy that is united.  They act together.  The closer in orb, the less distinct the energies of one or the other will be found.  This, truly, creates an entirely "different" energy from whatever the planets and Signs are usually found individually, depending on the planets, Houses, and Signs involved.

Later, we will talk about how to determine different "weights" or strengths in the charts.  For now, just remember that a conjunction is the strongest, or has the most weight, or any of the aspects.

Whether this is a negative or positive combination will depend upon the planets that are combined.  If their individual energies are generally in harmony with each other, then the conjunction will be positive in quality.  If the two planet's energies are opposed, then the energy will be negative.  If one of each, the stronger planet, the planet with the most "weight" will determine which, negative or positive.

The rulership of the Sun signs and the Houses can be used to determine how each are likely to behave when combined.  Yet, this isn't entirely a reliable way to determine how the mix is likely to affect the individual.  For example, the 1st House, Aries, is ruled by Mars.  Directly opposite in the Zodiac is Libra in the 7th House, which is ruled by Venus.  These two planets and signs are opposed to each other.  But, instead of these two planets being either positive or negative when combined with a conjunction, in this situation the planets in conjunction produce a balance of yin/yang energy, not a "positive" or "negative."  So, it is important to consider all factors related to a conjunction to determine whether or  not it is likely to be a negative or positive conjunction.   Factors to consider are the triplicities, yin/yang, House position, Sun Sign, cardinal, mutables, suceedants, mutables, angulars, rulership, fall, etc.

When interpreting a conjunction, also consider if any other planets make a "stress" or hard aspect to the conjunction, or whether or not another planet makes soft aspects to the conjunction.  This situation would require that the secondary "aspect" be "blended" with the conjunction in interpretation.  We will talk about special configurations a little later.

When more than two planets are involved, this creates as "stellium."  Everything that has been said about a conjunction is multiplied even more with a stellium.  There will be little doubt about the energy, weight, and force of this kind of a configuration in the chart.  When determining if a stellium exists, consider the question of orb.  The closer the orb of the planets involved, the greater the intensity of the stellium.  However, unless the planets are all within 1-3 degrees of each other, they usually would not be considered a stellium, but only wide orb conjunctions.  If the planets form a string of planets that are technically conjunct, but the two outer planets would not be within orb if the center planets were not there, then you have the energy pulled along from one planet to the other, kinda like skipping a stone across the water.  Again, how this group behaves is dependent upon the orb.

As I mentioned, there will be little doubt of the force and weight of a conjunction.  But, this kind of force is usually only seen by other people in the native's life.  The native is often oblivious to this kind of energy.  For example, a conjunction can cause the native to lose objectivity about him/herself and his/her activities and interests represented by the House, Sign, and planets involved.  For example:  a conjunction of Sun and Mars in Sagittarius may produce a great athlete.  But, the athlete has no interests beyond his sport and he cannot separate the game from his own identity and ego...his identity is the game.  If for some reason he could no longer play the game, he would be in a serious turmoil because he would lose his identity and focus in life.  The conjunction won't always create a difficulty for the native, as in this example, but when doing an interpretation, remember that this kind of inability to separate the energies is very much a part of a conjunction.

Sextile

Post by Youdah » Fri Nov 07, 2008 5:38 am

Sextile
Keyword: Harmony

A sextile is when two planets are approximately 60 degrees apart from one another.  I say "approximately" because it is rare for "exact" aspects to be found very often in any chart.  So, an "orb" is used to determine how much variance there is separating the two planets.  We discussed this during the section about Aspects and Orbs.

A sextile is considered a "soft" aspect.  This means that there is not a lot of energy created by the sextile.  If there are squares and oppositions in the chart to get this energy moving, it will generally produce a great degree of success for the native.  The native will have feelings of peacefully and harmony about him/herself in the areas represented with the sextile.  However, like all things in a chart, the individual planets, signs, and houses, and aspects with other planets must all be considered.

A sextile is an aspect that is more likely to produce an opportunity or positive situation or circumstance in the native's life, but requires that an effort be applied before any benefit can be had from the sextile.  In other words, a sextile creates a potential, and talents for the native, but does not guarantee any success until the native makes the effort to bring these opportunities, potential, and talents into his/her life in a definite way.  For example: the native may have a great talent for painting and art with a sun sextile neptune...but if the native never takes an art class, and never picks up a paint brush, then the talent will go to waste, unused.

Many astrologers like to read the sextile similar to a trine.  But, this is a mistake, in my opinion.  We will talk about Trines soon, but a sextile will not give the native whatever is promised by the sextile unless the native works for it and gives it some effort.  (A Trine will cause the talent to already exist without any effort required).

When two planets are in sextile whose Sun Sign rulerships are usually opposed or squared to each other, the sextile's harmonious energies insure that there will remain ease and compatibility between anything that is usually not in harmony with other aspects, planets, Signs or Houses.

A sextile is not a "hidden" energy from the native.  The native is usually very much aware that they have a great interest in, and ease in achieving, whatever sphere of life is represented by the sextile (the sign, planets, and houses involved).  It is an inner appreciation of themselves.  This is an aspect that can give the native a great sense of "self-esteem" and value because they know that they have the innate talents within them, so without too much effort or work, they are aware that they can excel in this area.

What I am trying to convey in the previous paragraph is what I started with, at the beginning of this discussion about sextiles.  A sextile is a sense of harmony, within the self, within the environment represented by the sextile placement, and within the sphere of activity.  With just a little effort, the sextile will bring peace, success and harmony for the native.

Trine

Post by Youdah » Fri Nov 07, 2008 5:38 pm

Trine
Keyword:  Acceptance

A trine is when two planets are at 120 degree angles to each other.  A trine causes internal optimism and good-will for the native in the areas of life indicated by the planetary placement.  As a result of the native feeling generally optimistic, "good luck" seems to happen to them without any effort on their part.  The trine is  considered a "soft" aspect.  Although the energies work easily together and with harmony, it does not generate a lot of energy.

The energy of the two planets work in harmony, and reinforces each other.  Because this energy flows so effortlessly, the native can have a tendency to take his/her "good luck" and easiness for granted, so does not use the gifts he/she has.  This is different from the sextile that requires a little effort.  The trine makes things happen regardless of the native's effort or despite the native's lack of effort in the area represented by the placement.

Without squares or oppositions in the chart, the native can recklessly waste the talents and good luck that is given by the trine.  He/she can be prone to take unnecessary and dangerous risks, believing that everything will always turn out OK for him/her...and he/she is usually right.  The native seems to cheat fate or get more than his/her due in this lifetime.  The native can coast through life, taking the route of least resistance, without some squares or oppositions in the chart.  Others in the person's life can resent his/her apparent good luck, and that life always hands them abundance without any effort or work on the native's part, even when they richly deserve a little dressing down, it never comes without squares/oppositions in the chart.  If without adequate squares/oppositions, for example, the native could get fired from their job for misbehavior, but find another job very quickly that pays the native more money and with better benefits.  Things just don't go "wrong" for the native.  If, by progressions, the trine is lost to other more difficult placements, the native will be unable to cope with new squares or oppositions forming in the chart.  In other words, the trine can be a blessing, or it can be a curse without sufficient obstacles and challenges in the native's life to create a personality with more character.  To overcome the fatality of many trines, or a grand trine, or a chart without adequate squares/oppositions, the native must learn gratitude for what they've been given, humility, and compassion for others who are less fortunate.  The native must learn to "give" and not just accept.

With adequate obstacles and challenges from squares and/or oppositions in the chart, the native will always have an inner reserve of strength and good luck that helps to uplift the native in hard times, and always provides a way to succeed despite anything else happening with transits or other less fortunate placements in the chart.

Both planets in a trine will always be of the same element: earth, water, fire, or air.

A trine is accepting of different kinds of energy, situations, people that are represented by the placement.  If an Air element in a social House is involved, for example, the native might have numerous friends from differing backgrounds, ethnicities, and walks of life.  This can sometimes cause parents or friends to "raise an eyebrow" because the native will accept anyone with equal goodwill, even those people who most people would consider inappropriate friends.  Continuing the example: the native would never understand or see why their more outrageous friends are controversial, because the native would get along equally with everyone.

If the native has difficult squares and/or oppositions elsewhere in the chart, the trine will assist in overcoming the difficulties, so that the native is never entirely without a means to succeed in life.  A trine can "uplift" the native and prevent feelings of despair or depression with an inner reserve of talent and "good luck" that will arrive when needed by the native.

Because of this accepting quality, a trine can combine many apparently disparate situations, personalities, and opposing traits within him/herself with equality, even if no one else can see or understand this.  As a result, good luck and beneficial situations, people, and events will always surround the native in the area of life represented by the placement.

If trines are strong in the chart, the native's most beneficial result of it will be an acceptance of him/herself just the way he/she is.  This is a goal for every person that is natural and easy with the trine.

This was pretty exhaustive and informative.

So Squares and Oppositions place challenges in the persons chart and hence makes him more prone to struggles and thus hardwork. While the Trine can help the individual to be an optimistic and make life easy but on the extreme end could make him/her' take things for granted'.

Yes, "more prone to struggles and hard work."  But, again, it depends on the two planets and the placement.  Saturn could definitely cause this.  But, squares and oppositions with Jupiter usually just make "energy" which can insure some kind of pleasant activity...such as a nice night out on the town with friends...or winning an election.  In a personality, it can cause someone who loves to be with their friends, depending on the House.  A square/opposition with Venus would do about the same things, depending on the House.  I'm saying this so you won't fall into the habit of thinking that every square and opposition is going to create "struggles and hardwork."

If you had a trine with saturn and Jupiter, for example, could mean that you have a sense of discipline but balance it easily with steady, careful growth that insures success in anything attempted, depending on the House placement.  So this wouldn't produce a lot of "struggles" but would guarantee success with the "hard work"  of the saturn influence.  Saturn would tone down the trine's usual "easiness" and demand hardwork, but Jupiter would guarantee success from it so there wouldn't be much "struggling."  I'm saying this so you won't fall into the habit of thinking that all trines are easy times.

Remember when I suggested index cards or sheets of paper for every "thing" we study?  This is why.  Because when you start to interpret something, it's easier to get the right "mix" if you can lay all the relevant cards in front of you, to focus the mind.  For example a card for "saturn + square + Jupiter + 3rd House + Sixth House + Gemini + Virgo."  When you have all those keywords and information in front of you, then you can start to get a blending of all those factors.

So, it is accurate what you said, but only in certain combinations (placements).  I know this gets confusing.  But, this is why I suggest the index cards.  Using them will help someone doing an interpretation from inaccuracies.  In most of my examples during the posts about specific aspects, I include the influence of another planet, so I have not talked about them "purely" on their own.  This was to give some direction in interpretation.  So, the examples are not the interpretation with those aspects.

I had wanted to do more interpretations earlier in the class.  But, I learned from the first lesson that this was impossible to do until we had a better grasp of the Houses, planets, Sun Signs, and aspects.  So, some of the information that you haven't had yet, in the class, is the squares/opposition descriptions and the planetary descriptions.

Semi-Sextile

Post by Youdah » Sat Nov 08, 2008 7:56 pm

Semi-Sextile
Keyword:  Unease

We haven't talked much about the semi-sextile so far in class.  A semi-sextile is considered a "soft" aspect and a "minor" aspect.  By "minor" we mean that it doesn't carry a lot of strength in a chart; but it has some force, and so can support other "soft" aspects and can help to balance or reduce some of the energy of the "hard" aspects.  It can, that is, if you listen to what the semi-sextile is trying to tell you.  Both the sextile and the semi-sextile require some effort before the goodness of the "sextile" can be given to you.

Be careful when you use the symbol for a semi-sextile.  It is similar to the inconjunct (or quincunx).  Both are the letter "K" but with the inconjunct (or quincunx), the "K" has fallen forward; but the semi-sextile, the "K" has fallen on its back.  There isn't any meaning to the "K" falling on its back, as far as I know.  If anyone knows why this particular symbol was given to the semi-sextile, I would enjoy knowing it.

A semi-sextile is when two planets are at 30-degree angles to each other.  This is half of the angle of a sextile (which is 60-degrees).  Because the semi-sextile is a weak aspect, no more than a 2 degree orb is used generally.  Some astrologers use as much as a 3-degree orb, but I've never seen this wide of an orb reliable.  So, I limit the orb to no more than 2-degrees with a semi-sextile.  A semi-sextile (abbreviation: SSx) is usually only one Sun Sign apart from the other planet in the aspect.

Because this energy is rather weak, some astrologers don't bother with it at all.  I have to say that I'm tempted to overlook it a lot of the time, too.  Yet, it can give some valuable information to the native if it is really "listened to."

Have you ever had the feeling that you've forgotten to do something, but you can't remember what it is?  Or, perhaps, you are leaving your house to go to work, and you have the sense that you are forgetting to take something with you.  Later, when you get to work, you realize that you forgot to put a report into your briefcase that your boss wants to see right NOW, even though previously he said he wouldn't need it for another two days.

A semi-sextile is a sense of unease.  Something isn't quite right, but you're not sure what it is.  With a semi-sextile, whatever it is you forgot, or can't remember, or can't figure out, or what you can't 'put your finger on,' isn't anything with lasting effects.  But, life would go smoother if you take the time to figure it out beforehand.

And that is the key to a semi-sextile.  With just a little bit of effort, or taking a little bit of time, or putting in a little bit more work on something, or exercising just a little bit more care, you will save yourself some frustration.

A semi-sextile is the niggling little feeling in the back of your mind.

Some astrologers relate the semi-sextile to a karmic obligation that needs to be met...something small that was left undone that must be done in this lifetime.  If that is true, then the SSx message isn't anything that is strong enough to earn you karmic points if done, or hold you back if it isn't.  Again, just getting it done makes life smoother in the area represented by the placement.

If the semi-sextile doesn't have a karmic duty attached to it, then it certainly has a tendency for something from the past to come back into your life.  Example:  you're on your way to work with the niggling little feeling, but you can't figure it out.  Since you know astrology, you think you should pull over to the curb and try to figure out what is going on.  But, you don't.  Next thing you know, a police car is behind you with its lights on.  This is when you remember that you forgot to pay the parking ticket, and now you're in real trouble because since you didn't pay the ticket, there's a warrant out for your arrest!

Past things left undone will come back to you...the semi-sextile is just trying to warn you to pay attention to it, so save you a little trouble.

There is no reason to be superstitious and worry every time you get a little feeling that something is wrong, though!  That will drive you nuts!  Just check to see what area of life is represented by the placement of the SSx.  Spend a little bit of effort, and things will work out alright.  Even if you don't take the time, things will still work out alright.

A semi-sextile is just that niggling feeling in the back of  your mind that something isn't quite right.  Listen to it when you can.

When you have given this "little bit more," the sextile will have done its job and so make the rest of the day, year, or whatever placement it represents, run more smoothly and successfully.

Square

Post by Youdah » Mon Nov 10, 2008 6:59 pm

Square
Keyword:  Energy

A square is when two planets are at a 90-degree angle to each other.  A square is considered a "hard" aspect.  As I discussed in the post about "Aspects, Good and Bad" this does not automatically mean that it is "negative" or "bad."  The factors that determine whether or not a square will be difficult will require looking at both planets and the Houses and Sun Signs where the planets are located in the chart.  This will involve whether or not the two planets are in a cardinal, mutable, cadent, angular, etc. House and Sun Sign; and whether or not the planets are in an exalted, detriment, or fall placement (we will talk about his later).

I cannot stress enough that a Square does not automatically mean that something bad will happen.  A Square gives energy.  If the placement is beneficial, then the square will give energy, not catastrophe.  The effects of a square in the natal chart will tend to be more challenging with more struggles when an outer planet (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) makes a square to an inner planet (Sun, Mercury, Asc., Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn).

Some people, even other astrologers, will say that a square will cause stress, chaos, upheaval, problems, difficulties, struggles, challenges, doom and gloom.  These folks should hide under their beds and wait for the sky to quit falling!  This is not the energy of the square.  A square can certainly produce these things, but "stress" isn't always "bad."  Starting a new job, for example, is "stressful" but it can be something the native has worked for, for many years to achieve.  A square is energy.

Because the square can generate a lot of energy, it is acceptable to use as much as a 7-8 degree orb.  A square is usually 3 Sun Signs apart, so that the same "nature" of the House or Sun Sign placement is doubled, doubling the energy also.  (Such as both planets in an Angular, Suceedant, Cadent, Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable House and Sun Sign.)

In strength, a square has almost as much energy and importance as the conjunction.  A square can produce situations similar to the trine, but with stressful or difficult effects for the native (where the trine doesn't give any stress despite its sometimes extreme situations).

A square will show an internal conflict.  Again, the conflict may not be a "conflict" at all, but differing viewpoints or impulses that are easily managed.  If you have many squares in the chart (and this is relative depending on the chart as a whole), this is a learning lifetime and you're not on vacation from growth and self-knowledge and improvement.  Life will bring you situations that can challenge you, or at least to confront anything that isn't balanced and well integrated in your personality.  When done successfully, the square bestows knowledge, wisdom, confidence, maturity and healing of the soul.

When the energy of a square hasn't been dealt with yet, the native can be depressed and fearful.  Circumstances in the person's life will continue to repeat basic situations until the native is able to successfully integrate the information/knowledge into his/her life.  In this way, a square can be helpful for the native to overcome lifelong difficulties.  A possible example is a woman who was abused as a child.  She is then attracted to spouses who repeat similar kinds of abuse as when she was a child.  When the woman finally realizes that she does not need to accept this abuse, the square will have served its purpose and the difficult circumstances brought by the square will leave her life and bother her no more.  The energy of the square will become inert.  If the energy is activated again, it will be of such a mild nature that the woman will find no distress at all in the transiting square and it would just renew her resolve not to put up with abuse.

When a person is determined to overcome anything in his/her life, the square will give sufficient energy and situations to allow the native to achieve that goal.  Likewise, if there is a goal (perhaps graduating from college or being hired for a certain job, particularly if the task has been difficult or challenging for the native), the square can help and assist the native in achieving these goals.

Because of the energy of a square, they can be more difficult and upsetting when the native is younger, until they learn to deal with the energy effectively.  A bully on the playground can cause enormous difficulties at age 7.  But, encountering a bully at age 30 will just result in the native telling the bully to get lost!

The square will always cause action of some kind, a response, cause a decision to be made, confront an uncomfortable part of the self, deal with a problem in the native's life, etc.  To really be able to interpret the square, however, both planets and both Houses and Sun Signs must be considered.  The sphere of activity or influence can be seen by these things, and to a lesser degree, by the rulership houses of the planets involved especially if there is a third planet that is activating the rulership House and Sun Sign making an aspect to one of the planets in the square.

To determine the effects, again, the placement must be considered and the natures of everything involved in the placement.  For example, a square between mars and saturn can produce a lot of energy, but will not necessarily produce any action.  The saturn will act with equal force with the mars to keep a lid on a pressure-cooker situation, or within the native's personality or psyche until the native is able to resolve this internal pressure.  Continuing the example from above: the woman may feel a great deal of anger represented by Mars, but feel unable to do anything about her abuse (saturn).  However, squares between planets like Jupiter and Venus can guarantee some kind of activity, but there will not be much stress or friction involved.

The only thing that can really be said comprehensively about the square is that there will be a great deal of energy involved.  Where and how this energy is manifested requires that all factors be considered with this placement.

Opposition

Post by Youdah » Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:31 am

Opposition
Keyword: Opportunity, Relationships

An opposition is when two planets are at 180 degree angles from each other.  Since the natal chart has 360-degrees, an opposition will cause the two planets to be directly opposite each other on the natal wheel.  This aspect is considered a "hard" aspect, so expect it to create energy.  Usually, as much as 7-9 orb may be used.

Although these two planets are in opposite Sun Signs, they can have the same qualities.  For example: a planet would be in opposition if at 3 degrees Aries and the other planet at 3 degrees Libra, but both Signs are Angular and Cardinal.  Because this happens with an opposition, any opposition can find "common ground" in which to resolve any conflict or difficulty created by an opposition.  Usually, the only real factors that are differing in an opposition will be the element (Air, Fire, Water, Earth) and any differences between the two opposing Houses.  Continuing the example above: Air and Earth, and the differences between only ones own individual ego (1st House) vs. cooperation with others in a partnership (7th House).

Because an opposition has as much that is the same, or in harmony, as it has that is different, the potential for conflict resolution and eventual harmony is very great.  Yet, this kind of harmony from an opposition will not occur until the differences have been recognized, there is a confrontation, and there is an effort to resolve the parts that are not already together or in harmony.  An opposition will create the opportunity to find harmony.

An opposition can be thought of as two different "polarities."  One is positive and the other is negative.  Again, this is not a value judgment, but a description of behavior.  One may repel while the other tries to attract, for example.  The push-pull can create stress and tension until the opposites are synthesized or integrated.

To give an example:  With mercury oppose Moon, the mind and intellect may be in conflict with the emotions and heart.  A person may be attracted to someone (emotions) that they know is going to be bad for them (intellect).  Once a decision is made not to enter into the relationship, the opposition is resolved.  Or, alternatively, if the decision is made to have the relationship despite the problems, then the effects of the opposition can continue because the situation remains that is causing the opposing emotions and intellect.

An opposition can also mean a climax or a time of testing.  Suppose you started a new business when there was a conjunction or a trine.  When the significators of the new business become in opposition, it will test whether or not the business is a sound one, or that good decisions have been made while the business is operating.  If the business and decision-making have been sound and productive, then the opposition will have no further effect other than the opportunity to review operations, and then finding them sound, there is no further effect from the opposition.  If, however, the business decisions were bad, the company run poorly, then the business can survive through the opposition, but is likely to fail completely and go bankrupt when the next square of significators occur if the problems found are not corrected.  The opposition will give the opportunity to make corrections before there is a total failure.  This energy of the opposition can relate to any field of endeavor, project, or personality trait.  It will always give the opportunity to make adjustments.

Oppositions in the natal chart will show the native areas of life that must be balanced.  For example: a opposition between planets in the 4th House and 10th House may find a native whose close ties to mother or home prevent him/her from fully expressing themselves out in the world, or by bending to be what family wants the native to be, and so has failed to follow their own path in life.  When stress transits activate this natal opposition, the native may find themselves in a personal crisis.  Yet, someone else with the same placement may have early asserted their need to follow their own path, so the transits that activate the opposition may only bring brief conflicts with family over the native's chosen profession, yet the native remains confident and secure in their decision and so is able to successfully defend his/her decisions.

This is often the result of an opposition: relationships.  Because the Houses below the horizon are about "me," and the Houses above the horizon are about "us" and "others," then when two planets are in opposition, it almost always involves a planet that is below the horizon and the other planet that is above the horizon.  Sometimes this can produce the feeling of "me against the world" or "you and me against the world" or "it takes two" to fight/love/etc.   The only times when this will not occur is when a wide orb puts both planets either above or below the horizon.  Yet, one planet or the other will be so close to the cusp of a House that "others vs. me" is still going to be a major theme of the opposition.

Whenever there is an opposition, the thing to first discover is what's really the issue, and how can it be resolved?  When oppositions are approached in this way, they can help to resolve any problems with all kinds of relationships and seemingly incompatible emotions, situations, people.

The thing that I want to convey is that these "hard" aspects can be used in positive ways, and that they give "good" energy when understood.  I get really tired of so many believing the hard aspects to give nothing but problems, struggles, doom and gloom.  An opposition helps to resolve differing points of view, and gives the keys to how to do that!  The square gives wisdom and confidence when the energies are used!  Positive thinkers like to say to 'look at problems as opportunities'...these hard aspects do exactly that!  Without them, we'd all be lying around without the energy to get out of bed!   They are necessary to life, and when understood can work to benefit the person, not just cause problems!  :)

Semi-square

Post by Youdah » Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:44 pm

Semi-Square
Keyword:  Frustration

A semi-square is when two planets are at a 45-degree angle to each other.  This is half the number of degrees of a square which is 90-degrees.  Because this aspect doesn't have a lot of energy, the orb is usually limited to 2-3 degrees.

In many ways, the semi-square is the weaker version of the square.  This is not to say that there will be the same kinds of situations and emotions and personality types involved.  A good example of a semi-square is that you are late to an appointment, and this is when you get stuck in traffic, or all the traffic signals turn red just before you get to them.  Mild irritation and frustration.

In the natal chart, unless with a strong mutable placement, shows someone who tends to be inflexible.  Minor obstacles seem to get in the way of life in the area represented by the placement.  They key to using this energy is simply to plan ahead (continuing the example above: leave your home with enough time to get to your appointment without hurrying) and also to be willing to adapt to changing circumstances.  The lesson of the Semi-Square is that there is more than one way to get things done...be open to different ways because the square will certainly show you that "your" way of doing something isn't always the best or easiest way to do it.

Like the semi-sextile, the effects are mild, and the energy requires a little bit of effort and changing one's viewpoint or position to overcome the effects of the Semi-Square.

The semi-square is also a "trial run" or "dress rehearsal" for the approaching full square.  If the native is having a lot of difficulty with the energy of the semi-square, then the full square that involves the same planets, Sun Signs, or Houses is going to produce a more difficult time for the native.  Learning how to handle this energy when it is still weak will go a long way to helping the native handle the full square in a positive and productive way.

Inconjunct (or Quincunx)

Post by Youdah » Tue Nov 11, 2008 6:37 pm

Inconjunct (or Quincunx)
Keyword:  Karma

You will see the names Inconjunct or Quincunx used interchangeably.  To be accurate, this aspect isn't an inconjunct or related in anyway to a "conjunction."  Only this kind of energy would sometimes use a name that is completely wrong!

Both the "Inconjunct" and "Quincunx" mean when two planets are at a 150-degree angle to each other.  Maximum orb is no more than 2-3 degrees, although if there is another planet that makes an aspect to one of the planets in an inconjunct, the orb can expand inexplicably, including the weaker aspects like the sextile.

This is my favorite aspect!  This is the Trickster of astrology.  I find it enormously amusing to see and experience its effects.  This aspect proves that the universe has a sense of humor, although you may not always be laughing too much with this aspect.  This aspect turns everyone into the bumbling Inspector Clouseau (of the Pink Panther movies).  Traditionally, this isn't the typical interpretation for a Quincunx, but it's my experiences and observation of it.

This is what happens when you put two things together that are totally incompatible.  It's putting someone who can only speak Spanish in the same room with someone who can only speak French, and then telling them to solve a problem together.  It can be hilarious.

This is the energy that whatever you do, it will be the wrong thing.  If you are driving down a road in a strange town, unsure of how to get where you are going, this energy will make sure that you are headed in the wrong direction, and you won't figure that out until you've wasted the entire day and all the gasoline in your car.  This certainly can produce a lot of frustration, anxiety, and problems.  Or, you can just laugh that this was inevitable when trying to go anywhere under a Quincunx.  Don't bother taking a compass with you!  It won't work right under a Quincunx.

In a natal chart, look for ways that the native has no clue about themselves, no insight or understanding whatsoever.  The truth is usually unknown to the native just as the true direction was unknown to the person driving in a strange city in the example above.  What's worst, no one else can figure out why things usually turn out poorly for the native, either!  The areas of life represented by the placement can give valuable clues about what usually goes awry for the native.  If you are doing an interpretation for someone else, don't be surprised if they tell you that you are totally wrong!  LOL!

Most astrologers say that the Quincunx always influences health and financial matters.  I can guarantee that as soon as you get the idea in your head that this is all that a Quincunx affects, it will change its sphere of influence behind your back, while you aren't watching. And, once again, you will have no idea what's going on.

If 150-degrees is divided in half, it is 75-degrees.  This is approximately the angle of the Quintile (which is a minor aspect of 72-degrees).  When anything energizes the Quincunx by being inbetween the two planets at the midpoint, or at the Quintile, you can expect the Quincunx to have an extra dose of energy, magnifying its effects.  Since this energizing point is so unusual, and rarely used much in astrology, naturally you will have problems figuring out why this Quincunx got energized!  :)

So, if the energy of a Quincunx is so amorphous and difficult to understand, then how do you ever overcome its effects?  Well, that happens when a third planet makes a sextile to the Quincunx.  This forms a configuration that resembles a "Y" with the long arms of the Y being the Quincunx and the short distance between the upraised arms of the Y being the sextile.  This configuration is called a "Yod."  The Yod looks like a skinny triangle.

When a Yod is formed, the native has the opportunity (by using the effort required by a sextile) to understand this part of their psyche and personality.  When a Yod is formed, the native has an unusually great opportunity to resolve lifelong problems, hidden factors that have influenced them perhaps for many lifetimes and certainly since childhood.  The flash of understanding that a Yod can confer is staggering!  Of course, the amount of healing that is possible far exceeds the apparent "energy" that would be expected by this placement or the Yod, or far exceeds any compensation for the frustration, confusion, and conflicts that the native may have endured with this kind of energy.

When, by transit, this configuration is there, the potential for growth and self-understanding, and resolution of a myriad of difficulties in the native's life is possible (even some that are not represented by the Yod placement).  In this way, the Yod has the potential to give far more in return than could ever be imagined.  It can bump the native into another realm of karmic growth and understanding.  This is when the Trickster becomes the "Finger of God" which can heal the native from many difficulties and afflictions.

Who else but the Trickster would devise such an aspect for us?
