Traffic reduction and saving on soaring oil prices

Post by mahesh_uls » Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:31 pm

To unlock traffic Bangalore, I have a plan.  This can reduce traffic as well as improve health of people.

We can popularize bicycles.  Govt or NGOs or Public private participation should set up shops with cycles for rent on a massive scale.  The model should be pick a cycle at a shop, ride, and drop at the nearest shop of the desired destination and pay a rent.  This way we can encourage people to use cycles if the travel distance is around 1 to 4 kms.  Many people do not use public transport because the main bus stops with multiple bus routes are about 2 to 3 kms from their residence and also, their destination is about on an average around 2 km from main bus stops.  By setting cycle shops, we an encourage people to use public transport and it also saves time as people reach bus stops quicker than walking.

The nitty gritty of the model needs to be worked out.  But definitely this would work as we know in China cycle is a very popular mode of transport.  All the shops in the city needs to be networked and the cycles needs to be fitted with GPRS and easily traceable.  Each cycle needs to be given a code and be unique.

Please review this concept and publish in your newspaper.

Sincerely,
Mahesh B
