clear mind

I'm still learning tarot. One thing that always gets me is what and how to ask a question. Also, should your mind be clear? I noticed that when I did the 2 readings my mind was racing trying to get answers. Does this change the reading that you will get or does it matter at all?

When I first started Tarot, I was told to clear my mind of all but what I was asking the deck.  I was also told to keep it short and simple.  Too much going on I was told confuses things and you may not get an accurate read as it may read one thing and you wanted to know about another.
