What a wild combination! Help please?!

I've just done a 3 card reading on a relationship situation and received Death, Ten of Cups, and Eight of Swords.  Doesn't look so promising by dar, I suppose...whoaaa...  
I'm by far no expert at Tarot, but I've never received a combination quite *this* conflicting...WOW!
Would appreciate any thoughts and insight...

Was the three card reading past, present future type of spread or did you ask your question and picked three cards.....??
