Well, the life path is the easiest to find.  You add up all the numbers in your date of birth, then reduce that to 1 digit (unless it turns out to be 11 or 22, but usually even then).  So if you were born November 17, 1983, you would add the numbers of the month (11/2), day (17/8), and year (1983/20/2), which would give you the number 12, which in turn reduces to a life path of 3.

For the expression number, you must add up the numbers that correspond with the letters of your full name at birth (first, middle, and last).  The letter number correspondence is like this:
1- A, J, S
2- B, K, T
3- C, L, U
4- D, M, V
5- E, N, W
6- F, O, X
7- G, P, Y
8- H, Q, Z
9- I, R

Once you have added up the numbers in your name, you reduce them to one digit (or again, 11 or 22).  The final number is your expression number.

For your heart's desire/soul urge number, use the same chart above, but only count the vowels in your full name.  Reduce and there you go.

Your personality number comes from the consonants in your name the same way.

Those are the major, important calculations.  Beyond that, it just gets complicated  :smt002

July   =7
6       =6
1989 =9
     -------
      22/4

This gives you a 22/4 life path.

Just to get a good idea regarding numbers, you go through some numerology books.
