Avatar is a Sanskrit word meaning 'incarnation', originally implying the presentation-in-flesh (human or animal etc) of the Sublime and Divine Essence! Different spellings such as awatar, awatara, avatara (The Divine Essence alone knows how many other ways the cat got skinned!). Mostly relegated to the realm of mythologies (globally) from distant and even not so distant past (2-3000 years or so, arbitrarily), the term has found a new resurgence in cyber-lingo and even in video games (role-playing types) and of course the famous animation morph-movie recently in 3D and 2D!
The term has now encompassed the concepts of alter-ego and extends even more imaginatively and creatively. In some ways this cyber-practice is in the same lineage as handles which folks use on internet. The reasons run the gamut from playfulness to paranoia! Both extremes and everything in between is perhaps justified in many cases since internet is gradually becoming plagued with all kinds of crimes and criminals and some folks use handles to protect themselves from being identified due to a variety of personal reasons, including persecution by specific evil elements in their personal spheres. So, insecurity lies at the base of the practice, one may conclude, real or imaginary! Naturally, this does not apply to benign end of the gamut which deals with playfulness and is similar to a 'costume-party' setting, which is how these practices began in cyber-realm and then evolved more graphically on internet etc.
Vedic astrology a form of eastern astrology, or a sub-sect of it (VA), as some prefer to call a certain part and parcel of it, deals with the concept in its framework which some ignorantly dismiss off, though guardedly, as mere fatalism!
