Yes consciousness can under certain conditions operate outside of and independently of the brain (when we are still alive), and it also survives the death and total dissolution of the physical body (including the brain matter).

Consciousness surviving physical death (the soul leaving the body behind at the moment of death) has been accepted by many of the world's major religions for centuries, but a good proportion of the scientific establishment is yet to catch up.

There is a rapidly accumulating body of evidence mainly from OBEs, NDE's, death bed visitations, as well as the work of evidential mediums from all over the planet that we are spiritual non physical beings having a temporary, physical human experience.

Dear Brian,

When the brain dies, the mind and hear ceases to exist; but the SOUL carries on.

When allowed for too long and permitted unfettered -- JUNK accumulates?

Like in the case of any computer??

Reboot always requires and demands that any forum that has gone through Kaya-kalpa must begin afresh...

Those at the *helm* might -- or perhaps not?

Out with the boring boring old and terminally-JADE-ed and reboot with the *NEW and FRESH*?
Oh my God. Absolutely....!

Mind.

Consciousness.

Soul.

Many of our misunderstandings about what the other person is talking about come from exactly what the words mind, consciousness and soul mean to us.

The soul is often regarded as the individual mind, which is in turn a part of the universal mind, which some people call God.

Therefore mind and consciousness (which is a property of the mind) have always existed, and will never cease to exist.

Mind and consciousness are as a consequence, ETERNAL.

They exist outside of time and space.

The other day many years ago (few years before internet deluge arrived) via my 300 baud modem (Heck! now modems are running 150 Mbps and industrial strength ones using fiberoptics in single digit Gbps speeds...!) I read on a newage wisdom type forum that even stones and trees have consciousness, though no soul or mind...! Mother Nature serves their need by becoming the Mind and Soul for those...).

Of course fantastic as that *thought* was, no documentation or background evidence (not even anecdotal...!) was provided by OP and in that Newage nursery-daycare times no one even thought of or dared to question the *wise* wizard-like OP...! Such were those simpler times...!

We humans are blessed of course but in our continual somewhat crazy strife to climb towards *supremacy* we (some humans!) commit such utter and senseless violence and have been doing so for hundreds of years if not longer ...!

The latest ones being in New Zealand and Sri Lanka ... :smt010

May God, Mother Nature, Grace us all with working minds, souls and consciousness... :smt113

Amen to that! :smt023

BTW I fully believe that consciousness is the basic building block of all that exists (physical and non physical), which includes stones and trees.

It is our awareness of being conscious and apparently separate from our surroundings (including other people), which sets us apart from what are normally regarded as inanimate objects.
