Sanskrit, from India to Indonesia (Java)

Post by vic_jkt » Mon Oct 29, 2007 6:00 am

Indonesian culture got influence from many regions,
Especially from India, Arab, China

India culture came first, Hinduism and Buddhism are the two first religion from outside Indonesia.

The language (Sanskrit) came along with those religion :
Sanskrit influenced local language and became the root of ancient Javanese language (bahasa Jawa Kuno).

Today, many words in Sanskrit are still widely used and understood. But many words are forgotten.

Some words I know (and I suspect) that they came from Sanskrit, such as :
The numbers :
Eka (1)
Dwi (2)
Tri (3)
Catur (4)
Panca (5)
Sapta (7)
Dasa (10)

Animal
Singa (Simha / Lion)
Garuda (Eagle)

Pawana (Pavana/Wind)

Brajamusti (Vajramushti/Thunderbolt fist)
Maha (great)
Mahaguru (great teacher)
Mahasiswa (student in university)
Raja
Samadhi
Widya (Vidya/knowledge) It is used for female name
Sakti/Shakti

There are many more words I can’t write all of them here.

yup..those words are from sanskrit..
indonesian language took a lot of words from other languages, one of them is sanskrit..
this is happened because long time ago,a lot of people from all over the world come to indonesia to trade commodity (such as spices and other goods) and also coma to indonesia to propagate religions..
one of those first religoin that enter indonesia is hindu, which wrote in sanskrit..so,no wonder, after such a long time, some words originate from sanskrit still commonly used in indonesian language.

from yoga teachings  i understand there are several kinds of sanskrit.
the standardised version supported in India i believe is Devangari sanskrit, to be used as one of the several national languages.

i believe there are some ashrams that teach sanskrit online free!
