WOW  excellent question - requires an extensive answer.

Rocks are the building blocks of Earth.  They almost always contain some form of mineral, chemical or gas combined with silicates to form rock. They are as different as the ares of the earth that you find them.

Feldspar is a rock that contains mineral, ie Quartz.
Igneous rock are magmas, both above & below ground, ie Olivine aka peridot, below ground, & granite & obsidian above ground.  In this case the heat from the earth's core produces the smoothness, glasslike quality.
Sedimentary Rocks are those above ground and are unique to the area you find them in..they contain the most varied assortment of chemical & organic deposits.

Rock is formed under pressure, (gravity) and usually shaped by weather..water & air.
