How do I KNOW which gemstone is right for me?

I know that I've been told, you will just know or get a feeling-however, I have trouble getting energy from things-and am now understanding it may have to do with my root chakra being unbalanced. Is there a way I can know what gemstone is right for me? I'd also like ot note that I've been drawn to the color purple and therefore amethyst has become a favorite.

Does this have any kind of meaning?

The Amethyst will help to correct the balance especially as it sounds like you are overact in your root because you havent opened your higher chakras yet and so the energy is pooling at the bottom.
