what are the first steps that a complete newbie to Feng Shui should take?

what kind of books would be advised and what 'steps' should be understood?

i think lilian too's book is quite good. For more serious, you should take a professional course

Hi, xk001.  If you could luck on some of Lillian Too's earlier books they are indeed quite informative.  Some of her later releases are just rehashed ones although those that aid you in computations do work well enough.  Try to find some of Joey Yap's books too.

And as npb said do try to take up some courses but best first do reviews.  There are a lot of fakes out there.

If you could find time to also learn about Vastu - where Feng Shui is rooted on - it'll be a good foundation too.
