The Mind As a Servant

It’s very easy to vilify the mind,
Regarding it as something we need to transcend,
But to ourselves this is not kind,
For correctly viewed it’s our greatest friend.

It works tirelessly on our behalf,
Trying every problem encountered to solve,
Without which we’d rarely laugh,
For there’d be nothing difficulties to resolve.

However, most of us think that’s what we ‘are’,
Identifying as the thinker and with thoughts,
Making the mind and ego our life’s ‘star’,
Bound by judgements, ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts’.

Overlooking That in which mind and body appear,
Awareness, the constant perceiving presence,
Which, unlike the thought-flow, is always here,
Our fundamental conscious innermost essence.

This* is always still and serene,
Untroubled by what through It flows,
That by which all things are seen,

A stream of objects that comes and goes.

Identified with This* mind is relegated
From master to servant, its rightful place,
For then ego and small-self are negated,
And we return to ‘a state of grace’.

This effortlessly stills the mind,
For then there’s no more self-image,
Put into abeyance, alert to find
Working problems as they emerge.
