Not Clinging to Spiritual Experience

‘Nonduality’ is not a state which comes and goes,
But which forms a world-view, influencing our actions,
For there’s only Consciousness in which all flows,
Containing no fundamental divisions or factions.

So identifying with Awareness isn’t a state
To be maintained, but a recognition,
Of the perceiving presence which I rate,
As our innermost vital definition.

This is Consciousness at rest,
Whilst manifestation is That in motion,
The Absolute at Whose behest,
All things rise and subside in this Ocean.

Realization can produce ecstatic experiences,
Which can sometimes be useful confirmation,
But if clung to the mind often commences,
To try regaining them, causing consternation.

For states and experiences to and fro,
Whereas Awareness is That by which we know,
Our thoughts and sensations as they ‘show’,
And so is That which doesn’t come and go.

So if one attempts an experience to retain,
And suffers when the attempt is unsuccessful,
This is the signal to realise and thus remain,
As Awareness, beyond angst and the stressful.

For spiritual experiences are to be valued,
But not to be held as the ‘be all and end all’,
Whereas the realisation to which I allude,
Leads to identification with The All in All.

A poem based on a chapter of 'Freedom From Anxiety and Needless Suffering'.

I write (and read) these posts, based on my meditations and contemplations, as much for my own benefit as for that of 'others'. For this helps to keep me 'awake' in this illusory, and impermanent, world ... our perception of which is based purely on our physical, and mental, configuration.
