The Simplicity of Zen Awakening

Bukko, a great Zen master said
That it’s essential to see the root of life,
The centre, ever living, never dead,
Awareness - which is beyond all strife.

Zen sitting is not an operation to perform,
It’s simply to recognise the True Heart,
Discover what you were before you were born,
By realising that from This you’re never apart.

Transcending the small self to grasp The Self,
So that the mass of judgement and knowing,
Distinctions and opinions that are the small self,
Are abandoned leaving the True Self showing.

Rinzai, founder of a famous Zen school, maintained,
In normal daily activity there is no dearth,
For the spiritual light behind the senses is ever retained,
This knowledge could bring happiness on earth.

For this ‘light’ is the radiance of Awareness,
By which everything detected by the senses is ‘seen’.
Awareness is eternal Consciousness at rest,
The constant presence by which we know we’ve been.

He also said there’s no peace as the body/mind,
For impermanence does not choose, affecting all,
However, if as Awareness Itself we are defined,
For seeking external happiness we do not fall.

If at the time of a thought your pure and clean no mind shines,
This is ‘Big Mind’, Aware Nothingness – with no differentiation,
Your passionless mind is the radiance of This which ‘outlines’,
Whilst discriminating mind notices the fleeting manifestation.

A poem from 'Poetry From The Simplicity of Awakening' based on a chapter of 'The Simplicity of Awakening'.

I write (and read) these posts, based on my meditations and contemplations, as much for my own benefit as for that of 'others'. For this helps to keep me 'awake' in this illusory, and impermanent, world ... our perception of which is based purely on our physical, and mental, configuration.
