Models of Meditation

Yogic meditators often prefer the lotus position,
With the spine straight so Kundalini can rise,
Practicing mantra repetition and visualization,
To reveal The Absolute which never dies.

In the higher stages bodily movement is avoided,
For the mind enters a delicate and sensitive state,
By any disturbance the attainment may be voided,
The value of stable posture one cannot overrate.

The problem is that many of us are not comfortable,
Sitting cross-legged which causes hips and knees to ache,
For beginners a chair is sometimes permissible,
Often a grudging concession that spiritual teachers make.

The simple solution is to lie with a straight spine,
In the corpse pose on a firm but comfortable surface,
Unmoving, yet at ease, with chakras in a line,
So that no fidgeting, swaying or motion takes place.

The aim is to discover Pure Awareness,
Which Sogyal Rinpoche says that ‘we really are’,
Whilst Shunryu Suzuki advocates calmness,
Allowing thoughts to flow freely so they don’t ‘jar’.

Keeping the mind free of all and every afterthought,
So that they may gradually subside,
Revealing Pure Awareness, Big Mind, that’s sought,
Which the mind waves tend to hide.

This can be simply achieved in any situation,
By noticing there’s already Awareness of thought and sensation,
Which is readily completing the ‘mission’,
Becoming ‘aware of Awareness’ not needing much concentration.

A new poem based on a chapter of 'Fundamental Questions'.

For more on the 'technique' described in the last verse see previous post 'Strengthening Awareness of Awareness'.

I write (and read) these posts, based on my meditations and contemplations, as much for my own benefit as for that of 'others'. For this helps to keep me 'awake' in this illusory, and impermanent, world ... our perception of which is based purely on our physical, and mental, configuration.
