Making Crystal Rune stones
Hi,
I sent this query to Gem but I may have misdirected it. Can you help?
Do you have any recommendations for creating a crystal rune set. I have several crystals, but no matching sizes...
Do you know if that would matter?
Can they be used?

Re: Making runes
I would prefer that sizes matches, but that is not a requirement, just a recommendation. As far as different crystals, it probably makes sense to use the same crystal material (e.g. citrine, amethyst) otherwise different crystals will send different signals to the runecaster and that may mess up rune selction. If all the runes are the same crystal material, then there is no harmonic bias or preference of one over another, and they would be fine to use.sorceress426 wrote:Hi,

What about using
Semi-precious stones such as Haematite or Lapis Lazuli?
Hi Kiwimac,
Welcome to Mystic Board
Personally I wouldn't recommend Lapis Lazuli because of its hardness, or rather softness. 5-5.5. It all depends on the quality of the stone and the chemical makeup, Hematite too can be hard to find natural pieces that are suitable, most 'Hematite' rune sets are in fact Hematine, or melted and reformed iron ore. Best to stick to the harder quartzes

Ok
Or course, the problem then is the hardness of the stone & working safely with it. Perhaps wood would be best, any objection to using Oak or Birch?
Re: Ok
When making any kind of carving its always best to use safe practice, protective eyewear is a must and with stones, a dustmask too as some can give off irritating and toxic dust.kiwimac wrote:Or course, the problem then is the hardness of the stone & working safely with it. Why not try each wood and see what you think? Oak is harder to work but can produce some lovely runes. I have a set I am making in Ash at the moment

Re: Ok
Okay although this about Crystal materials I will answer your question here, as Gem said you definately need to use protections when working with good as you don't want to hurt yourself.kiwimac wrote:Or course, the problem then is the hardness of the stone & working safely with it. Both Oak and Birch wood are very magical woods, but if you wish to go with tradition I would go with Apple Tree wood as traditionally Rune sets were carved out of A Fruit Bearing Tree. If you can't get hold of that then what ever would you can get your hands on will suit your purposes. Take for example where I live, there are unfortunately very few trees so I have to do with reclaimed wood to make stuff out of.

Gem Ash would produce a magical set of runes as The World Tree was reputidly an Ash Tree, let me know how they turn out am very interested especially if you could take some happy snaps of them.
