I've heard someone saying that it's possible to bring things back through a window, but that it takes strength and energy that has to be built up. I'm yet to experience this. I know it works the other way, using items from the physical world in dreams.

I have heard a technique to bring back things from the astral realm. It is to condense the object as you slowly bring it into the etheric realm, and then slowly condense it before you return to your body.

I read a book a while ago with a similar concept of "binding" magic. You bind a physical object to yourself so that if you lose it it will come back to you in a matter of time. It would not be a big stretch to create such a binding that it would through a witness (a material link) or perhaps if you are doing your work on the astral plane like a shaman then making a link there to bring it to you. This is probably as close as you can get to it and actually how most magic involving finding or receiving something works.

Look up under apports.  Spirit objects appear when the medium is used to materialize and de-materialize an object.

Actually if you read up on seances from the 1800s when physical phenomena was all the rage, you will find that mediums produced apports (small items such as rocks, stones, jewellery, etc.) during their trance state.  A friend of mine had a dream to dig in the back year at a specific spot and found a semi-precious stone.  Apports are real and produced instantly by a medium.

Weren't they merely hoaxes? I have heard of magicians who materialized objects (interestingly, they are always small enough to fit within the palm of the hands), but I don't know anyone personally. I have yet to hear of a non-stage magician who materialized something as big as an elephant in front of an audience.

Yes, the items were small and could be held in the hand.  This does  not in itself suggest fraud and no not all demonstrations were fraudulent.  

There was a scarib that was produced at a rather famous seance.  It was taken to a professor of ancient items to be identified and cataloged.  

Some of the items were actually hot from their transition from spirit form to material form.
