Chennai rocked by earthquake
Saturday June 28 2008 02:55 IST
Express News Service
CHENNAI: The mild tremors in a few places in the city took people by surprise and rumour-mongers had a field day sending panic SMSs and offices of newspapers were flooded with telephone calls seeking to know the correct position.
This website's newspaper received a dozen calls in a span of about one hour from 6 pm. The moderate tremors that shook parts of Chennai on Friday left scores of people scurry for cover. The tremor was felt in parts of Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, T Nagar, Koyambedu and Padi. Especially people in high-rise buildings felt the impact of the quake.
T Kothandaraman, a teacher, said he was taken aback when he felt a mild 'shock and shake' beneath his feet at 5 pm when he was climbing down the stairs of a store in T Nagar. 'Even before I could understand, it was over,' he said.
A group of youngsters near a playground in Nungambakkam said, "We could not even believe that it was a quake," and added that 'for a moment something around was shaking.' In some office complexes, people came out of the buildings.
Meanwhile, an official release from the Met office confirmed that an earthquake of moderate intensity with a magnitude 6.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 1710 hours on Friday, with its epicentre at Latitude 11.0 degrees north and longitude 91.6 degrees east of Andaman Islands.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad, said the quake originated from under sea at a depth of 341 m. However, there was no tsunami threat
