Possibly due to its clang-association (10-10), d10 seems to have become the mainstay of jyotish these days for all cadres (of experience?) of jyotishis as the clincher for occupation, profession, line-of-work, in modern times!
BPHS recommends it to be looked at for mahat-kaarya which to me implies something closer to ones 'mission' as opposed to livelihood, for which latter, D10 has become relegated to!
While ayanamsha does pose a problem were the jyotish diaspora (those venturing outside the boundaries of classics such as BPHS, US etc, which practice or divergence is frowned upon those of puritanical preference) were to look analytically (as opposed to anecdotally), it is not just D10 but other finer Dxes as well that would have inherent issues of similar kind (MMMB).
Livelihood is covered in pretty much all older and more recent texts, and not all instances seem to be considering D10 as the be all end all. Factor in the reality that diversity of professional/occupational in the modern realm was probably beyond the wildest imagination of doyens of older times (who categorized occupation in far fewer and simpler terms to serve the general needs back then), and one has the recipe for pandemonium of confusion!
So, when must the D10 be examined? Embedded in that verbalized thought is the muted question: Everyone has all the vargas in their machine-generated printouts, which are cheaper than dime a dozen these days and near zero in cost if one never prints those on paper with their laserjets or inkjets. Then, are all those sixteen and more vargas even important for all individuals in their lifetimes? Do many of these are simply like genes that exist in our DNAs but never find expression?

On Saturday itself, we had a Jyotish meeting (Once a month affair) wherein the varga Charts were to be discussed. The confusion prevailing was palpably evident. The texts and anecdotal observations abounded. Probably, not enough attention, effort and analysis. Again, I observed that the 'perception' of the observer was more relevant than anything else.
Interestingly, while the ayanamsha and slightly hazy birthtimes significantly impact the varga chart lagna it does not so seriously imact the relative positioning of grahas in various vargas.
Thankyou for providing the trigger!

Speaking of triggers, makkhi in hindi or bee/bee-line (in English), in rifle-speak (fully realizing that the two terms refer to the same part on the rifle, although different when it comes to insects of those names!) is very important. Steadiness of hold counts of course (the calmer one is, the steadier!), but despite all that if the 'sights' are not well attuned, well-trained as they say, the *aim is not met!Votive wrote:On Saturday itself, we had a Jyotish meeting (Once a month affair) wherein the varga Charts were to be discussed. Actually, that is why a matrix approach in astrology is handy as opposed to relying on one varga (or ashtakavarga!!) etc that seems to be what ancient and modern wisdom seem to recommend, perhaps wrongly! I have a feeling that although redundancy-variability introduces problems for many, these also portray the Greater wisdom of GOD who is the essence, essentially in everything.
Using a crass comparison, while God is the HQ of the bank, each individual has a God ATM and when folks seem to pray to the HQ, they are perhaps addressing the ATM. I am sure you will get the metaphor readily. And I mean in the astrological sense!

Yes, it is very true that varga chart printouts are lavished, but while reading them, very little data that work well are seen around..Rohiniranjan wrote:Possibly due to its clang-association (10-10), d10 seems to have become the mainstay of jyotish these days for all cadres (of experience?) of jyotishis as the clincher for occupation, profession, line-of-work, in modern times!

I wonder if D10 should be seen in terms of livelihood only?
What about housewives? They are also performing mahatphalam at home?

Although at least one Maharathi has recommended that it is more meaningful for great folks with a *mission* in life. Of course that could very well be true for homemaker ladies too, like the mothers in many of our case.
I prefer that label over the somewhat diminuitive term, 'housewife'!
Ciao!
