why-Why-WHY? W-H-Y...?
Brihat-Jatka, our revered classic book of North Indian*gems* -- believed/claimed to be much older than Uttarkalamrita (perhaps of South Indian origin) are also represent a point of departure from even older texts such as BPHS also was written (script) instead of being originally spoken (oral tradition). It has 28 chapters ending with a neatly organized summing-up.
Its chapter 19th is a veritable :smt017 (head-scratcher?)! For instance, how the sign-location of let us say moon, makes it 'reflect' the spectrum of possibilities of planets in such a varied manner? Even more puzzlingly, after that the theme-tune of the venerable author changes in a rather drastic manner!
Hence the 'header' about this ancient :smt017 ...

Could it be that just as the Christian Bible was supposed to be authored by God alone but was actually written by many different human beings, that Chapter 19 of the Brihat Jataka was transcribed by someone with a very different approach to the complete truth or way of interpreting these matters to its sole credited author who was Varahamihira?Brihat Jataka or Brihat Jatakam or Brihajjatakam (Sanskrit: बृहज्जातकम), is one of the five principal texts written by Varahamihira. the other four being Panchasiddhantika, Brihat Samhita, Laghu Jataka and Yogayatra. It is also one of the five major treatises on Hindu Predictive Astrology, the other four being Saravali of Kalyanverma, Sarvartha Chintamani of Venkatesh, Jataka Parijata of Vaidyanatha and Phaladeepika of Mantreswara. The study of this classic text makes one grasp the fundamentals of astrology. Brihat Jataka is considered as the standard text-book on Vedic astrology, and sometimes described as "India's foremost astrological text"
In other words in Chapter 19 Varahamihira may not have been personally responsible for its drastic departure from what came before or after it.

Unlike Parashara who is believed to be really ancient and from the era of oral tradition, Varahamihira is said to be more recent (6th CE?) and was one of the "nine Jewels" in the court of King Vikramaditya II. So Vrihajjataka and other works of Varahamihira are less likely to have been modified or tampered with since they were scribed and not word of mouth.eye_of_tiger wrote:Could it be that just as the Christian Bible was supposed to be authored by God alone but was actually written by many different human beings, that Chapter 19 of the Brihat Jataka was transcribed by someone with a very different approach to the complete truth or way of interpreting these matters to its sole credited author who was Varahamihira?Brihat Jataka or Brihat Jatakam or Brihajjatakam (Sanskrit: बृहज्जातकम), is one of the five principal texts written by Varahamihira. the other four being Panchasiddhantika, Brihat Samhita, Laghu Jataka and Yogayatra. The change of style I was speaking about was in the 19th chapter itself. The first part was about moon in different signs and aspects to it by other planets. Individual aspects are dealt with for the first five signs, with malefics being lumped together in the remaining 8. Although with moon in 2,3,5,10, Saturn's aspect seems to be not so bad but positive in some cases. If one factors in rulerships etc, some reasonable underpinnings can be figured out.
Just thought it was interesting -- no big deal! :smt004
