Whenever we come out of a long term, 5 year relationship we are carrying 'baggage' from our pasts into our new relationships. His distancing is a way of protecting himself, from love and commitment. Never assume that because of all your TLC and love and caring about him, this will change.

Maybe one of the reasons that he is no longer engaged is that he could not 'bridge that distance' with his ex-fiance, as this is something he has done since childhood.
