Silence!

Post by boondoggy » Mon Apr 20, 2009 7:53 am

No consideration of live music performances can ever be complete without including the musical inspirations invoked by silence.
I recommend John Cage 433 (available for download on you tube)
Which is in fact 4 minutes 33 seconds of pure silence recorded by a full symphony Orchestra complete with a baton wielding conductor with a full theatre audience.
Google and enjoy!...........(the file was too large to be attached)
My body tells me things that my mind disregards
My mind speaks firmly and my body just laughs.
My spirit reminds me that they both mean well

Alas, Mr. Cage himself admitted later that this was a purely artificial recording and that there was no silence in nature. Indeed, if nothing else, all people hear at least two things - the sounds of their circulatory and nervous systems.

Yet another time he said that he didn't even intend to record silence; he just wanted to catch the casual noise of the audience.

So - if you are romantic enough, you can get inspired by silence, but never, never, never can you get the silence itself.

I've never heard of avant garde music, can some of you explain what it is? It sounds interesting :)

None of the music I've ever listened to before was based on silence. The closest I've heard to that is the April Fool's Day prank track iTunes put out for free. Everyone was downloading it without knowing it was a prank, and it's just a silent 2 minute track lol
