do you have a favorite myth/legend?

Post by epsilonsmirror » Tue Jun 26, 2007 8:26 am

My favorite myth is the story of how the animals came to be as they are.
My favorite legends are about old castles and battlefields.
A myth explains about the world and humans in some way.
A legend is about a person group of people animals and so on that has had something extrordinary happen to them.

Pick a myth! I don't think I have a favorite, as such, but I find them ALL incredibly fascinating. Just imagining the ancient cultures striving in their world to make sense of the majesty they saw, gets me hopping!

Legends? Anything that strikes me. Gilgamesh, just about any version of the Arthurian mythos, Cucuchainn, the South Americas, China (I'm just starting to read about them now). So far, I'm loving them all.

myths or legends

Probably Merlin and the like - not sure if he was legend or myth, but wizards and sorcerers, shaman and witch doctors.  They are many and varied and worldwide.

Not the wretches that turn people into frogs and such, but those that healed the sick and divined the truth.  Those that could harness the wind and fire, the lightning and the rain.  Those that could walk through fire without being burned or buried alive for days on end and never die.  Those that lived for centuries and built up their powers and knowledge - no one knows how they died - that part is never told - assuming that they ever really died.

I think they are still here.  new bodies, new faces - but just as real as ever.

My favorite legend is the solar eclipse which the old folks said the sun was being devoured by a giant serpent. And the sun will be release as the humans start to worship the serpent.
Did I miss something?

My favourite myth/legend (historical fact?) is the tale of Cassandra of Troy. The story has always struck a chord with me from the time I first read about it as a child.

I love all the myths (greeks, egyptians, roman, celtic) but I like a lot the sun gods and the goddess Isis, also Aphrodite or Venus.

Pandora's box is also amazing. :)
When I get logical, and I don't trust my instincts...that's when I get in trouble.
