Ego

The word "Philosophy" is derived from the Ancient Greek - philosophía (compounded from phílos: friend, or lover and sophía: wisdom). To quote from WikiPedia, "Philosophy is the discipline concerned with the questions of what is the right way to live (ethics), what sorts of things ultimately exist and what are their essential natures (metaphysics), what is to count as genuine knowledge (epistemology), and what are the correct principles of reasoning (logic).

Imagine an individual going about life in today's world without Ego, which is self-identity as the original term was employed by psychologists. Lately, the term has been hi-jacked by self-appointed messiahs and armchair philosophers as something bad and terrible. They are confusing between Ego and egotism, the latter representing an inflated version of "who i am" at a personal level.

Ego and the identity of self is nothing bad and anyone who must still go out in the world and earn a living would know that it is not something you can just shirk and shake off and walk away. In psychological terms it is what keeps us 'together', and allows us to function without upsetting the social norm we live in (those living in silos of their own making are not included in this world-view obviously!).

For those who have gone beyond the pragmatic worldly realm and have arrived at sainthood, what the heck are you doing on this very worldly forum full of real people plugged into the real world, anyway? ;-)

The moment philosophy becomes ethereal, hairy fairy and irrelevant to the observed reality, it shall become yet another BOOK/TOME in the library that will be more attractive to the mold and bacteria and dust than to real human beings who were supposed to use it and keep it in circulation and thusly, keep it alive and in circulation! ;-)

Ask Dattaswami that question personally since he declared to be a God pole. I don't think it's any of your business why others are here. As for why and any condemnation you may have for certain one's, I think you first have to know what they know before you can judge them. The other point is simply this, you must first cast the log out of your own eye in order to help your brother get the mote out of his eye. Apparently, acadamia has went to your head instead of your heart. I say this as one who also needs to keep this in mind.

Ego is not what keeps us together. It is what sets us apart. The problem is if we are One, then why should we be apart unless you THINK you have something to show.

I have to agree with rohiniranjan the ego is very important within your consciousness and defines who you are on a day to day basis.  The ego has a bad press for no real reason other than the word being taken out of context and used by people who who have no idea of its origins what the ego actual does and even who coined the definition and what other words that should be used along with ego.

I also agree that the theory behind the ego is still as sound a concept today as it was 100 years ago and psychology is very much for the here and now.  Out dated theories and supposition do belong in dusty old books.

Just for the record the ego does keep us together as in mentally together, its the rational part of the brain that balances out our drives, pleasure etc with our morality.
Enjoy when you can and endure when you must.

Hehe :-)
From the confrontational and insulting tones that are surfacing (the true face of Ego/Satan!), it seems like old RR has begun to rattle some cages. Hopefully the rattling will continue and the 'rust' will eventually come loose and the incarcerated may eventually manage to escape from the mental prison of their own making!

My work is almost done, hopefully!

Don't mistaken tones. See the words if you wish. Intent is always there, not always known, but there nonetheless.
Hello ----

first off it is interesting that you begin by deeming ---ego---as necessary evil----
can agree with necessary
but evil
can not------
*************
metphysically speaking--the ego is a portion of the spirit associating with the current incarnation and the "scractch pad memory" for "this life happenings". This life happenings to include each word---each thought---each deed--- during this life period.

Thus necessary is correct...........

i send you blessings, peace and love-----pop
You have a way with words sir! Very enjoyable to read! But then, that is why you are the Professor :-)

An infant is not born with ego, psychologists say. The ego developes as the baby grows. It is most likely that the baby (individual) has no control over the ego as it develops and yet the individual when grown up gets blamed and chastised for his or her ego!

How unfair are these self-appointed moral judges who are confused between ego and egotism!

I rest my case! :smt015

I have to confess as God is my witness. The more we dialog the more I like you. You still need a spanking.
No rage here, or pounding. It's more like it's on automatic pilot.

Stanley,

Let us postpone the 'spanking' until after you have resolved the gender and sexist issues (going by your knee-jerk, spontaneous reaction -- what you call *automatic pilot*, because often "rage" even mock-rage arises from those deep-seated unresolved issues!

Thanks for the diagnosis doc. Is that like not letting go of the apron strings? You know, letting the dead rest. Or are we still in the dark ages. It feels soooooooooooooo GOOD--sooooooooooooooooo Good. TO SUFFER SO BAD (SMILE)
