BUDDHIST WISDOM
He knows in every way beings passing away, and their re- arising; unattached, awakened, well-gone: hes what I call a Brahmin.
- Dhammapada, 419, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu
Not to do any evil, To cultivate good, To purify one's mind-- This is the advice of the Buddhas.
- Dhammapada, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
Fields are spoiled by weeds; people, by delusion. So what's given to those free of delusion bears great fruit. Fields are spoiled by weeds; people, by longing. So what's given to those free of longing bears great fruit.
Not even if it rained gold coins would we have our fill of sensual pleasures. 'Stressful, they give little enjoyment'-- knowing this, the wise one finds no delight even in heavenly sensual pleasures. He is one who delights in the ending of craving, A disciple of the Rightly Self-Awakened One.
- Dhammapada, 14, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.
Don't cling to anything and don't reject anything. Let come what comes, and accomodate yourself to that, whatever it is. If good mental images arise, that is fine. If bad mental images arise, that is fine, too. Look on all of it as equal, and make yourself comfortable with whatever happens. Don't fight with what you experience, just observe it all mindfully.
- Bhante Henepola Gunaratana, "Mindfulness in Plain English"
Faith is the basis of the path, the mother of virtue; it nourishes all roots of goodness.
- Wu-chien
Each form, each particle, is a Buddha. One form is all Buddhas. All forms, all particles, are all Buddhas. All forms, sounds, scents, feelings, and phenomena are also like this, each filling all fields.
- Pai-chang
Transient is this world; like phantoms and dreams, Substance it has none. Grasp not the world nor your kin; Cut the strings of lust and hatred; meditate in woods and mountains. If without effort you remain loosely in the "natural state," soon Mahamudra you will win and attain the Non-attainment.
- Tilopa, "The Song of Mahamudra"
